Childhood, Parenting, and Reflection:
How Parenting Affects Your Life Journey

We interviewed six people from two different backgrounds: Chinese and white American.

All interviewees are in their 20s and are either currently attending university or recently graduated. The interviews were all conducted using Zoom. Our interviews focused on understanding our interviewees’ family lives and how their parents have influenced their life decisions up until this point. We asked questions about aspects of their lives from childhood to adulthood in order to gain insight into their relationships with family members and how these relationships have shaped them into the people that they are today.
What values do parents try to instill in their children, and why does it vary between people?
What lessons learned from parents do people remember and appreciate the most? How do different styles of parenting affect people’s sense of self and their life choices, going into adulthood?

Being an International Student Parent is not easy. However, with all the facilities and support around me, I think I can handle it."
